Heritage city is permanently defined by its urban planning and architectural and artistic styles. Respectively, this plan contributes indirectly to the social interaction including customs, inhabits, commercial activities, and so on. Social and cultural attitude has an effective impact on the heritage constructions. Often, the governmental entities responsible for the local community requirements (needs & wants). Regarding these responses, the actions have a great impact altering the historical urban planning as well as its cultural significance and the factor of authenticity and integrity.
There are various researchers and projects that to be handled the problem of heritage conservation and documentation in Rashid city (Rosetta), Egypt. The project "Rashid - World Heritage Site" handle starting with the topic of urban architectural heritage and social interaction in the zone of heritage city "Rosetta" – about 168 Km from the capital Cairo - one of the oldest cities in Egypt to develop the folder of protection and management. Respectively, Egyptian world tentative heritage site "Historic Quarters and Monuments of Rosetta/Rachid" becomes being officially inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Developing the former folder and considering the steps of the process of heritage management plan at Burra Charter, HeritageForAll in collaboration with Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Arab Council of the Social Sciences' had been created a workshop "Urban Architectural Heritage and Social Interaction" to understand the heritage destination estimating mainly the social and cultural interactions between the local community and the heritage buildings.
About what this workshop?
Workshop "Urban Architectural Heritage and Social Interaction" was conducted at Rashid-Open Air Museum, Behira Governorate, Egypt between 4th and 8th of October 2017. Regarding WHC, since 2003, Rashid is, unfortunately, one of heritage site which is still on the Egyptian heritage tentative list. Respectively, HeritageForAll initiative in collaboration with Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities is seeking to complete its nomination folder becoming one of Egyptian world heritage sites. Regarding ICOMOS Charter On Built Vernacular Heritage (1999), and ICOMOS Burra Charter (2013), a workshop is considered the first phase understanding the place throughout investing the efforts of multidisciplinary perspectives to develop the cultural significance and the heritage management plan.
Which association does organized this workshop?
HeritageForAll initiative is mainly the workshop creator and organizer under the supervision of its founder Mr. Mohamed Badry, in collaboration with Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities (Administration of Cultural Development and Community Engagement, Minister Office – Museums Sector: National Rashid Museum). This (workshop) was made possible (in part) through the support of the small grants program (Cycle 1 - Round 3) of the Arab Council of the Social Sciences with funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). Moreover, Australia ICOMOS honored our workshop sharing internationally its outcomes via Australia ICOMOS E-Mail News No. 804.
HeritageForAll Initiative mainly focuses on the heritage and/or museum management and conservation. It shares up-to-date aspects in relation to heritage conservation, site management, and museology with the young professional within its virtual platform as well as a group of capacity building activities. These activities are often opened to all interested people from all educational backgrounds and from various age groups as well. It is going to be a consultation entity for the heritage sites and museums presenting the applicable recommendations and suggestions. It seeks to raise an awareness of the local community for their cultural heritage.
Who are participants?
HeritageForAll initiative has selected about 30 participants for their experience and educational background (Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Architectural Conservation, Education, Tourism, Archaeology, and History) as well as workshop staff. Those participants collaborate together investigating a case study of Dehliz el-Mulk Street at the historical quarter of Rashid-Open Air Museum developing touristically, economically and socially the historic city and preserving the manifestations of local cultural heritage.
What are inputs?
Workshop "Urban Architectural Heritage and Social Interaction" was occurred along five days starting with some input lectures under the following themes: "Architectural Style of Historic Rashid City" by Arch. Dr. Mohamed Elzohairy, "SUSTAINABILITY | from HERITAGE TOURISM to DEVELOPMENT: a Methodical Approach to Dealing with Heritage Area" by Arch. Hamdy el-Setouhy, "Historical Buildings and Social Interaction" by Ms. Nagwa Bakr, and "Rashid: Built Vernacular Heritage and Site Management" by Mr. Mohamed Badry as well as a walking tour under the supervision of General Director of National Rashid Museum Mr. Said Rakha. Then, we developed a meeting listening to the notes of participants' direct observation process. According to these notes, we divided the whole number of participants into six groups. Regarding their ideas, they started to estimate the current situation and how far the local community in Rashid interacting with their cultural heritage either tangible or intangible heritage. In the last day, each group presented their project and workshop instructors professionally evaluated it. Using informal education, each group listen to the comments of other participants learning new skills.
What are outcomes?
Workshop "Urban Architectural Heritage and Social Interaction" was an interactive workshop by the young participants developing a creative and applicable recommendation as well as reviewing its implementation mean such as designs, reports and so on.
Finally, after publishing the outcomes of this workshop, we hope governmental entities and the non-governmental organizations in the field of cultural heritage unifying together to support us achieving the second phase and develop the first steps of the heritage preservation and management plan file of UNESCO WHS tentative Site "HISTORIC QUARTERS AND MONUMENTS OF ROSETTA/RACHID".
