Outcomes of Workshop

Workshop "Manage Your Heritage Site !" had been done, along four days (April 19 - 22, 2017) under the supervision of Mr. Mohamed Badry – Freelance Heritage Researcher (M.A. in Heritage Conservation & Site Management) – with the support of Œcumene Studio learning the mechanisms and methods to manage heritage sites.

Workshop was started the first day clarifying the meaning of expression "World Heritage" and its disaggregation either tangible or intangible. Instructor gave some examples for each list. He define the criteria of nominating and inscribing the heritage sites as UNESCO WH list. Moreover, he clarified the timeline, concept, and the heritage issue in each international legislation including conventions, charters, documents, and declarations.

Then, along the second day, instructor explains the tools and mechanisms of the heritage management and its process regarding Burra Charter. Also, he applied the principles of preparing the heritage site management plan creating a field trip to Giza Plateau, one of elements of Egyptian World Heritage Site "Memphis and it Necropolis", to train the participants how to identify the statement of significance, to analyze the current situation of the heritage site, and then, to develop vision, mission and objectives. Finally, instructor gave along two lectures an introduction to visitor management, and heritage interpretation.

Field Trip – Giza Plateau, UNESCO WHS

Giza Plateau is the site of some of the most impressive ancient monuments in the world, including a complex of ancient Egyptian royal mortuary and sacred structures, including the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other large pyramids and temples.

It was the necropolis during the 4th dynasty. It contains mainly the three pyramids built for the most famous kings of the 4th dynasty: Cheops, Khafre and Menkaure, together with their subsidiary and satellite pyramids. It also comprises Mastabas and tombs for relatives and high officials of the kings, as well as temples forming parts of the complex such as mortuary temples and valley temples.

Identifying the site components, participants deliver the site to five components as the following:

  1. The Great Pyramid of Cheops, and its boat

  2. The Pyramid of Khafra, its valley temple and Sphinx

  3. The Pyramid of Menkaure

  4. Mastabas and tombs for relatives and high officials

  5. The modern antiquities "Rest House of King Farouk"


Then, participants found out the site significance as the following:

  • The historical significance is represented in Memphis as a first political capital of ancient Egypt, and the unique ancient Egyptian mythological theory.

  • The architectural significance is represented in the internal and external design of pyramids and its overall aesthetic view "Picturesque".

  • The social significance is represented in the ancient social practices which had been taken place in the pyramids by the labors.


Then, they analyzed the current situation of Giza plateau identifying the following factors:

Vision
Giza plateau is the most well-preserved and interpreted Egyptological site in Egypt. It generates revenues.

Mission
Giza Plateau create a creative visitor management and interpretation committee. It is a non-profit entity. It is participated raising the awareness of the local community through multiple edutainmental applications. It is a rehabilitated space for gathering creative multi-purpose uses like events and social practices.

Objectives

  • Resetting administrative system

  • Developing a visitor management actions

  • Interpreting the heritage site characteristics and its facilities and services

  • Creating an edutainmental awareness program to target the local community
